Dorian Mode M.A. (Hons) is a multi-award winning jazz pianist but best known for the comic novel, A Café in Venice, published by Penguin Books (Random House in Europe) and the comic memoir, The Mozart Maulers, also published by Penguin. He has written several short stories featured in bestselling Penguin anthologies such as Girls Big Night Out 3 and Heatwave, Penguin Summer Stories.

He was a guest speaker at the Sydney Writer’s Festival and read an abridged version of his latest novel on ABC’s Radio National (twice). His first novel was also released internationally as an audio book.

His first and only screenplay was nominated for Best Unproduced Screenplay at the Australian Writer’s Guild Awards and he was an IF Awards finalist again for Best Unproduced Screenplay.

He pens regular features for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald and was a weekend columnist for The Daily Telegraph under the pseudonym Beachcomber. He writes for NRMA’s Open Road Magazine and leading travel magazines. He also penned the back page column for Storyline, The Australian Writer’s Guild Magazine.

In 2006 he was awarded an ABC Music Award for Best Jazz Composition and Best Instrumental in 2007. He was also awarded a prestigious Varuna Writing Fellowship. He teaches creative writing part-time at Newcastle Uni (Ourimbah Campus) and was head of jazz at the Central Coast Conservatorium for nine years. In 2008 was awarded an ABC Music Award for Best Theatrical Score for music he composed for the play, The Good German. In 2009 he was awarded an APA university scholarship for his doctorate (Music/English lit.).

He lives on the New South Wales Central Coast with his wife and two children and enjoys fishing, pubs and playing snooker with anyone born between 24th of July and 23rd of August.
